"Browse the backup for files" not sorting right
After disabling the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service, it (seems) like Windows 7 Backup is backing up incrementally. However, please see if you experience the same sorting behavior when browsing for files to restore: Double-click the backup file. The backup file has the same name as the computer name. Choose to restore files either for yourself or another user (if you're an Admin). Click Browse for files. Choose a backup and double-click it. Drill down until you get to a folder with files in it, or search for a date; either way, so you get a list of files displayed. Maximize the window so you can see all columns, and choose to view Details. Now click on a column heading to sort by that column and observe the sorting behavior. No matter what column you click on, the records always sort only by Name. Can anybody else reproduce this behavior?

Can you be more specific in what you mean by "Double-click the backup file"?I back up to my external MyBook hard drive. I just went through the steps you described, assuming you meant "open the folders on the backup drive under my computer name in Explorer", and at every turn the sorting seems proper. However, you seem to imply that "Double-click the backup file." starts some kind of backup restoral application.Edit: Okay, I see that you meant "Choose Restore all users' files", then "Browse for files" in the Backup and Restore control panel dialog, which brings up an Explorer-like window, but with some features hobbled (maybe it's just a fancy "file open" dialog). Choosing the Details view yields columns such as Size, Date created, Date modified, and Backup date.Yes, I can reproduce the problem you're seeing. Sorting by clicking any given column heading sorts only by name, either ascending or descending. That would be a bona fide bug.-Noel

Noel, glad you were able to reproduce it. Just to clarify what I meant by "double-click the backup file". I have Windows 7 Backup sending the backup to a drive (in my case E:). On the E: drive there is a file that has the same name as the computer. It's the Windows 7 Backup file. When you double-click it, you are prompted with three choices that say something like 1) restore your files, 2) restore files for all users, 3) manage the space for this backup).I tried going to https://connect.microsoft.com to report this, but there's no "Windows 7" connection. How else can this be reported?

Frankly, I'm not really sure how to escalate such a report.I've seen MSFT people here on this forum. I hope they take problems reported here seriously.-Noel

Thank you. Please also check the search feature of the same Browse for files list window. I remember trying to search for files with a specific modified date, but there were no results. Even though I could browse to a folder and see it in the list, the file that had the specific modified date for which I just searched.

Hi, Actually, the sort does work as expected. Only that it takes a short while before you can see the results on screen. Can you try waiting a few seconds after clicking on the sort icon? Let me know if it works. Thanks,Sneha[MSFT]

Not a chance. Clicking any of the columns causes the NAMES to sort. No amount of time results in any other behavior. Windows 7 Ultimate x64. -Noel

Noel Carboni is right. Every column clicked sorts only by name; and waiting for a period of time does not result in a different sort. In addition, searching by "datemodified" does not work. Even though a file exists with the date you searched for, the search results are empty. This behavior occurs in Windows 7 Professional x64 and Windows 7 Enterprise x64.

Hi, I seemed to have looked in the wrong place. Yes, this is a known limitation due to the way that dialog is implemented. Please try using the "Search" dialog provided in the same UI as an alternative. We have made note of the issue and will avoid it in the future releases. Thanks,Sneha[MSFT]

Hi, Although the "Search" dialog is available in the same UI (this is a Search button on the Restore files dialog), it does not allow searching by date; only by name. Thanks for noting this for development to fix the sorting and searching in future patches. Thanks, Tom.
